Public Health Under Scrutiny in Pensacola Amid Rising STDs

Experts say that timely screening and treatment remain essential tools in controlling infection rates.
In Pensacola, the rise in reported STIs has prompted local health providers and advocacy groups to maintain public outreach and education efforts. The Florida Department of Health in Escambia County offers testing and treatment services for a range of sexually transmitted infections and encourages residents to seek regular screening, especially before beginning a new relationship or if symptoms appear. County health officials underscore that anyone who is sexually active can benefit from testing and that early detection allows for effective treatment and prevention of further transmission.
Against this backdrop of increased public health attention, a Pensacola Police Department officer was arrested on March 13, 2026, on a felony charge for allegedly having sexual intercourse without disclosing his HIV positive status to a partner. Officer Pierce Cotton, 32, is charged under a Florida statute that makes it unlawful for a person who knows they are infected with HIV to engage in sexual intercourse without informing the partner and obtaining consent. The statute is intended to protect public health by ensuring that individuals have information necessary to make informed decisions.
The Pensacola Police Department placed Cotton on administrative leave following the arrest and confirmed an internal affairs investigation is underway. Jail records show he was released on a $10,000 bond. Department officials have not released additional details about the internal review. Cotton was previously recognized by the department in 2023 with a Life Saving award for resuscitating a person who was drowning in a hotel pool, but officials declined further comment on his current status with the department.
Health leaders say that cases involving nondisclosure and legal issues highlight the broader need for community education about sexually transmitted infections, the importance of communication between partners, and the role of public health systems in offering confidential testing and treatment services.
